Toyota to decrease output further

The world's automobile giant Toyota plans to further slash production to cope with a sales slump amid the global financial crisis.

Toyota says it will stop assembly lines at its 7 factories in the United States and Canada on December 22nd and 23rd, effectively starting the Christmas holiday period 2 days earlier.

It is unusual for the company to suspend all operations, including ones making small cars, whose sales remain fairly solid.

The move is in line with the company's plan to reduce its annual production worldwide by 950,000 cars to around 7.9 million cars.

Toyota already suspended the production of large vehicles at 2 US plants for 3 months from August this year.

The company says it will also suspend night shifts on some of the assembly lines at 2 plants in Japan, which make models mainly for the overseas market.
