Okada pledges grants to remove landmines in Bosnia

Japan has pledged more than 300,000 dollars to support international efforts to remove landmines in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada extended the offer when he met Bosnian Foreign Minister Sven Alkalaj in Tokyo on Monday.

Okada said the grant-in-aid worth 200,000 euros would be directed at landmine removal programs undertaken by international non-governmental organizations.

He said Japan is doing so out of respect for former Yugoslav republics that are striving to rebuild their nations following years of ethnic conflicts.

Alkalaj thanked Okada and the Japanese people for the aid, and expressed hope for closer ties with Japan in such areas as trade, investment and tourism.

The 2 foreign ministers also agreed to cooperate toward the goal of creating a world without nuclear weapons, advocated by US President Barack Obama.

On Tuesday, Alkalaj is due to visit Hiroshima, which suffered the atomic bombing in 1945.

G20 nations pledge to continue stimulus measures

Leaders at the G20 summit in Pittsburgh have agreed to work together to stimulate the global economy.

The leaders of 20 industrialized and emerging countries issued a joint statement on Friday at the end of their 2-day summit.

The statement says industrial production is rising in nearly all of the G20 economies and that international trade is starting to recover.

It says G20 member countries will act together to generate strong, sustainable, and balanced growth for a durable recovery.

It calls on nations to overhaul the economic growth model that relies on US overspending and shift toward more sustainable and balanced economic growth.

As a buffer against another crisis, the statement calls for international standards to regulate big bonuses at financial institutions and for coordinated efforts to increase financial institutions' capital reserves.

The statement also expresses commitment to changing the IMF quota formula so emerging markets and developing countries will have more say in how the IMF is run.

Japan's oldest hippo celebrated

Children celebrated the long life of Japan's oldest hippopotamus on Monday, Respect for the Aged Day, a  national holiday.

Nursery school children visited a zoo in Nomi City, Ishikawa Prefecture, where the animal is kept, and performed a dance for it.

The hippo dubbed "Whopping Grandma" is presumed to be 57 years old, which is equivalent to more than 100 human years.

In the celebration, the hippo was presented with a 12-kilogram cake of soy pulp---its favorite food---decorated with carrots and asparagus.

Despite its age, the hippo still has a big appetite, having five meals a day as well as some snacks.

The zoo director says watching the animal it is clear that, the key to a long life appears to be to take it easy and go at your own pace. He says he hopes that the hippo will remain the symbol of his zoo for many years to come.

JAL, Nippon Yusen to merge air cargo operations

Japan Airlines and Nippon Yusen, a major logistics company, are set to merge their air-cargo businesses.

Sources say that the plan is for Japan Airlines to spin off its freight division and to integrate it with Nippon Cargo Airlines, a subsidiary of Nippon Yusen. The companies plan to complete the merger by next spring.

The spin-off is part of the restructuring plan that the airline will submit to the government at the end of next month. The company has been in rehabilitation under government supervision.

In another restructuring effort, the company revealed plans earlier to slash the number of flights for unprofitable routes.

日本航空と日本郵船は２１日、日航の貨物事業を分社化し２０１０年４月をめどに日本郵船子会社の日本貨物航空（ＮＣＡ、千葉県成田市）と統合する方向で協議を始めると発表した。経営不振に陥っている日航は、大幅赤字の貨物事業を切り離すことで本体の収支改善を目指す。

　日航の航空貨物事業は国内トップだが、世界不況の影響で需要が大きく落ち込み、０８年度の売上高は前年度より１５％減の１９９８億円、収支は約 ２００億円の赤字だった。０９年度は売上高がさらに落ち込み１６４０億円になる見通しだ。ＮＣＡは国内２位で、０８年度の売上高は２３％減の７９４億円。 やはり１８８億円の経常赤字だった。両社は今春から北米線やソウル線で共同運航を始めるなど協力関係にある。事業の統合で規模を拡大し、国際競争力強化や コスト削減効果を見込む。

　統合後の新会社には、日航と日本郵船が同程度の出資をする見込み。ＮＣＡの株主である日本通運なども出資するかどうか協議する。

　９月末までに日航が策定する経営改善計画の中で、貨物事業のリストラは路線見直しや企業年金の改革と並んで柱の一つになる予定。日航の再建を監督する国土交通省が２０日示した案には、貨物事業などを想定したとみられる「同業他社との事業統合」の項目が含まれている。

China becomes Japan's largest trading partner

China overtook the United States to become the largest importer of Japanese products in the first half of this year.

A survey by the Japan External Trade Organization, JETRO, shows that amid the global recession, trade between Japan and China from January through June dropped 21 percent from a year earlier to about 102.8-billion dollars. That's the first year-on-year fall in seven and a half years.

Imports from China to Japan fell 17 percent, mainly due to a decline in demand for Chinese-made personal computers and digital cameras.

Exports from Japan to China also dropped 25 percent, because of falling demand for Japanese chips and other electronics parts.

But the margin of decline was rather small, compared with other regions around the world.

JETRO says Japan's exports of construction materials and electronic parts for cell phones to China have recovered because of China's effective pump-priming measures.

JETRO says it expects China to become Japan's largest trading partner for this whole year as well.

Absentee ballots accepted starting on Wednesday

Japanese who aren't able to vote in the Lower House election on August 30th are voting now by absentee ballot.

Absentee ballots are being accepted across Japan from Wednesday through August 29th, the day before the election.

In Fukuoka City, western Japan, about 10 voters cast their ballots at a ward office polling station soon after it opened on Wednesday morning.

Election officials say voter turnout appears to be better than the previous Lower House election in 2005, suggesting high interest among voters.

In that election 4 years ago about 9 million people, or 8.7 percent of eligible voters, cast absentee ballots.

Voting by absentee ballot has been increasing.
In the Upper House election in 2007 about 1.1 million absentee ballots were cast, representing more than 10 percent of eligible voters.

Cloned ox displayed to media

A clone of a Japanese ox, believed to be a progenitor of high-grade beef cows, has been unveiled to media.

The Gifu Prefectural Livestock Research Institute and Kinki University announced on Thursday that they had succeeded in cloning the ox, "Yasufuku-go", which died 16 years ago.

The 13-month-old, coal-black clone weighs about 300 kilograms and looks reportedly almost identical to "Yasufuku-go", thought to be the ancestor of most of the famous "Hida" brand, high-quality Japanese beef cows.

The researchers say they used frozen testicular cells to produce the clone in November 2007. Another cloned ox was born last year.

Kinki University Professor Kazuhiro Saeki told reporters that the frozen cells were not preserved under ideal conditions, so the experiment suggests that creating a cloned Mammoth may no longer be a pipe dream.

Akira Iritani, who heads the university's research team, said the cloning is the world's first case of extracting live cells from frozen cells preserved without any appropriate treatment, 4 years before cloning technologies were even established.

A butcher owner in Gifu city has welcomed the news, expressing hopes that it may mean offering more high-quality beef to customers at cheaper prices.

But a housewife says she questions the safety of cloned cattle beef and will choose meat only after considering this issue.

クローン動物の寿命は短い。

その原因の一つはDNAが短いから。細胞は細胞分裂を行うたびにDNAの端を数個切除する。これはDNA複製になくてはならない作業。

この切除される領域をテロメアと言うが、このテロメアの領域がなくなると生命（細胞）の維持に必要なDNA領域が削られていくため細胞はそれ以上分裂できなくなるor死んでしまう。

クローン動物は、その元の動物のテロメアの長さも受け継いでしまうので生まれた瞬間からDNAのテロメア領域が短い。つまり、15歳の牛のクローンで生まれた牛は見た目は0歳だが、細胞の年齢（？）は15歳の牛のそれと同じになる。

Japan, US to cooperate on iPS cell research

Japanese and US research institutions are to work together to expedite research on highly versatile stem cells known as iPS cells.

Representatives from the Japan Science and Technology Agency and the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine signed an agreement to that effect in Tokyo on Tuesday.

Induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells, are made by reprogramming adult cells to behave like embryonic stem cells, which can develop into any kind of body tissue.

Researchers around the world are racing each other to put the technology into practical use.

Professor Shinya Yamanaka of Kyoto University, who developed the cells and called for the cooperation of the 2 institutions, told reporters that competition should not hinder the advancement of the research.

But he said cooperation is important to prevent researchers from withholding their findings at a time when people suffering from diseases are waiting to be treated.

California Institute for Regenerative Medicine President Alan Trounson expressed hope that the agreement will promote cooperation among researchers.
